Dysdera crocata
Commonly known as Slater Spider, is a medium-sized spider found in New Zealand and other parts of the world. This spider is known for its distinctive reddish-brown cephalothorax and legs, and a shiny pale beige to yellow-brown abdomen. It has six eyes and large chelicerae, which it uses to prey primarily on woodlice.
Dysdera crocata is typically found under logs, rocks, bricks, and in leaf litter in warm places. It constructs silken retreats during the day and hunts at night without spinning webs. The spider’s powerful jaws are adapted to pierce the tough exoskeleton of woodlice, making it an effective predator.
